Luján Statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's NYSRPA v. Bruen Decision

Press Release

Date: June 23, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the decision of the Supreme Court striking down New York's concealed-carry license law.

"25 states require a permit to carry concealed weapons in public -- a precautionary measure widely accepted by the American people. At a time when the federal government is finally responding to the gun violence epidemic with real action, today's decision from the extremist justices on the Supreme Court strikes a blow to sensible gun safety laws throughout the country.

"There's agreement that concealed carry is widely supported. And yet, this ruling will make it more difficult for states to implement common-sense concealed carry laws. We know that gun violence and mass shootings are increasing in New Mexico and around the country. New Mexicans should know that I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to respond to this shameful ruling through further common-sense gun safety legislation, while continuing my proud record of staunchly protecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens."
