MENENDEZ STATEMENT ON DEATH OF MIGRANTS IN TEXAS

Press Release

Date: June 28, 2022
Location: Jersey City, New Jersey
Issues: Immigration

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) released the following statement in response to the death of at least 46 migrants outside of San Antonio, Texas:

"This is a horrific tragedy. These deaths are the consequence of restricting access to our asylum system and failing to create legal pathways for migrants at our southern border."

"The Trump Administration designed Title 42 to force migrants into life-threatening conditions and dangerous smuggling networks. While the Biden Administration did the right thing by trying to end this policy, the state of Texas and 23 other Republican-led states continue to pursue a xenophobic legal strategy to keep Title 42 in place and put more immigrants in harm's way.

"More than ever before, Democrats must unite against this failed border policy. These migrants who senselessly lost their lives trying to find a safer life in the United States deserve our commitment to ensure a tragedy like this does not happen again."
