Sergeant Jose Ramos, a Purple Heart recipient, was a tireless advocate for Vietnam veterans and helped to establish the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day organization. After his passing in 2017, Congresswoman Sánchez introduced legislation to rename the Whittier post office in his honor. The bill was signed into law by the President on December 13, 2019.

"Every single person who serves this country in uniform deserves a hero's welcome when they return home. No one believed in that more than Jose Ramos," said Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez. "Throughout our years of working together, Jose was a true partner and friend. Renaming the Whittier post office in his honor is a small token of gratitude from this community and from our entire nation. I am proud to formally announce and celebrate the Jose G. Ramos Post Office today."

Jose Guadalupe Ramos was born in 1948 to Augustine and Herminia Ramos. He attended Garfield High School in Los Angeles and enlisted in the Army when he was in 10th grade, serving as an Army Combat Medic. In 1968, Ramos received the Purple Heart. After returning home, Ramos worked at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital. He retired in 1999.

Like his fellow Vietnam veterans, Jose Ramos returned home from an unpopular war only to face hostility and resentment. He became a powerful advocate for veterans in our community and across the country. It was his personal experiences, and those of his fellow GIs, that motivated him to work toward establishing "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."

His legacy lives on as several states and cities across the nation, including California, have adopted "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."

In honor of Jose Ramos, Congresswoman Sánchez has long been an advocate of recognizing "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" nationally. She reintroduced legislation on March 25, 2022 to designate the last Saturday of March as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day."
