Schakowsky Statement on Fourth of July Weekend Shootings in Chicago

Press Release

Date: July 4, 2022
Issues: Guns

EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement on the devastating shootings in the Chicago area this weekend.

"This weekend, gunmen stole the 4th of July for thousands of people in the Chicago area. We are mourning the 6 dead, and the numerous wounded in Highland Park, Illinois during their 4th of July Parade, as well as the many others dead from gun violence this weekend in Chicago.

"Fourth of July Celebrations have been canceled in many communities.

"We must resolve to take action to end the obscene proliferation of military style weapons, as well as the easy access to all deadly firearms. The avalanche of guns is defiling the very freedom and security that the 4th of July is meant to celebrate. We must renew our battle to assure that everyone is free to realize life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
