Rep Lieu Statement On Initial Draft Supreme Court Opinion Overturning Roe V. Wade

Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) released the following statement in response to media reports, confirmed by Chief Justice John Roberts, of a draft Supreme Court decision overturning a 50-year-old precedent protecting Americans' right to choose what is best for their own bodies and health.

"The extreme, right wing Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and impose its radical, unpopular views on the rest of the country. Most Americans support upholding Roe v. Wade, which for decades has protected a person's right to choose what they do with their own bodies. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, we will see government-mandated pregnancies. We'll also see people, and those who assist them, wrongfully punished for seeking to obtain an abortion and make a decision about their own life and future.

"It is shocking that multiple Supreme Court Justices lied about Roe v. Wade during their confirmation hearings when they suggested under oath that Roe v. Wade was settled law. Their lies and mendacious actions are shredding the institution of the Supreme Court and eroding public confidence in the highest court in the land.

"If this decision comes to be, we could see the end of safe, legal abortion in the United States if Congress does not act. The House of Representatives already passed the Women's Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe v. Wade into law. The Senate must do the same."
