Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision overturning concealed-carry firearm restrictions in New York:

"A vast majority of Americans -- including responsible and law-abiding gun owners -- support commonsense gun safety measures. But this decision from six conservative Supreme Court justices just made our communities less safe. Individuals' second amendment rights do not trump the rights of their neighbors to live without fear in their daily lives. Allowing anyone to bring a weapon into a public place, particularly after the tragedies we've experienced at our schools, supermarkets, movie theaters, concerts, bars and other public places defies all logic. Worse yet, this far-right Court has opened the door for nearly every sensible gun safety measure to be challenged as unconstitutional.

"This by no means should stop our efforts to get guns off our streets and make our communities safer. We need to continue passing strong gun laws at every level -- federal, state and local. We need to continue marching for change. And holding leaders accountable when they make decisions that put the lives of Americans in jeopardy. This decision is a setback, but we have to keep fighting to change our country for the better."
