Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the passing of former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright:

"Madeleine Albright was clear-eyed about the world and how we could build a better one together. A child of Czech refugees, she saw firsthand how unchecked authoritarianism could upend the global world order and the lives of everyday people. Her story, of finding refuge in our country to later reach the highest levels of government as the first woman to serve as Secretary of State, is an American story.

"She guided our country to stand tall as the indispensable nation, knowing that we must be prepared to make sacrifices to defend democracy against those wishing to overturn it. Madeleine Albright was a trailblazer, a deep intellectual thinker, and a formidable diplomat who saw further than others into the future. With her passing our country has lost a defender of peace, human rights, and the values of the free world."
