Issues: Defense

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on the Department of Defense Naming Commission's release of a list of potential new names of military bases and property honoring leaders of the Confederacy:

"I am pleased to see the Department of Defense Naming Commission continue its progress to reckon with our nation's history and honor Americans who embody our values and reflect our nation's diversity. I've long maintained that traitorous men who fought to preserve the institution of slavery and defend white supremacy do not deserve to be honored by our military, and it is long past time their names were removed from places of reverence.

"The list of potential new names for these installations reflects the rich diversity of our military's history, recognizing men and women who have upheld our shared values and fought to preserve and protect our union. I commend the Commission's thoughtful and comprehensive approach to this process, engaging servicemembers, historians and local residents to create a list of individuals who have earned a place of honor for their courage, values, and sacrifice.

"I look forward to reviewing the Commission's final recommendations and Secretary Austin implementing them without delay."

Congressman Brown and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) championed a provision in the FY21 National Defense Authorization Act to redesignate military bases and Department of Defense property honoring leaders of the Confederacy. A bipartisan supermajority overrode President Trump's veto of the measure.

Following upcoming engagements with installation leaders, personnel and their counterparts in local communities to discuss the names, the Commission will select the final names for recommendation in the naming plan due to Congress by Oct. 1, 2022.
