Congressmen Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Brendan Boyle (D-PA), both Co-Chairs of the European Union Caucus, issued a joint statement in support of the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), for recommending that Ukraine be granted "candidate status' to join the 27-nation alliance.

"Today's statement by the European Commission is yet another example of the world unifying around Ukraine and against war criminal Putin for his brutal, murderous invasion of the country. Though more important reforms must be met, the speed at which this application has progressed is dramatic. We support the recommendation for Ukraine to join the EU."

Background

Ukraine applied for membership just days after Russian troops crossed the Ukraine border to begin their assault in February. Leaders from the EU are scheduled to meet next week to discuss the proposal.
