Lofgren, Johnson Applaud Biden Admin's Designation of Cameroon for TPS

Press Release

Date: April 15, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Following the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) announcement that Cameroon has been given the designation for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, the authors of the Cameroon TPS Act -- U.S. Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Chair of the House Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, and Hank Johnson (GA-04), Chair of the House Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property and the Internet -- issued the below statement:

"We applaud the Biden Administration for heeding our calls and designating TPS for Cameroon. This is the humane decision that reflects our true American values.

"For some time, multiple armed conflicts have made safe return to the Cameroon impossible. Unfortunately, rather than lawfully providing safe haven in the United States, the Trump Administration cut Cameroonians off from our refugee program and subjected those seeking asylum to inhumane treatment. That will always be a stain on our nation, but we are heartened that the Biden Administration is taking the proper steps to help right that wrong."

On October 12, 2021, on the one-year anniversary of large-scale improper removals of Cameroonian nationals, Lofgren and Johnson introduced the Cameroon TPS Act of 2021. This followed joint calls from members of the House Judiciary Committee in July 2021.
