Chairs Nadler & Lofgren Applaud the Biden Admin's Proposed Rule to Improve & Streamline the Asylum System

Today, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a rule to improve and expedite processing of asylum claims. This rule follows a proposal by DHS and DOJ to improve our asylum system in the summer of 2021. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) and Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), along with 37 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, submitted comments to that proposal as part of the rulemaking process. In response to today's rule, Chairs Nadler and Lofgren released the following statement:

"We applaud the Biden Administration's smart and sensible approach to addressing our nation's immigration court and asylum backlogs. We also appreciate that Secretary Mayorkas and Attorney General Garland adopted the important changes we proposed last year to ensure that this rule does not undermine due process or fairness in our immigration system. This rule is an important step forward in streamlining our system for processing asylum seekers at our Southern Border, while upholding the rule of law and ensuring that our country is meeting its humanitarian obligations."
