Eshoo Opening Statement at Legislative Hearing on Bipartisan, Bicameral Privacy Legislation

Press Release

Date: June 14, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) delivered the following opening remarks at a legislative hearing of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce of the Committee on Energy and Commerce entitled, "Protecting America's Consumers: Bipartisan Legislation to Strengthen Data Privacy and Security."

In 2019, Congresswoman Lofgren and I introduced the Online Privacy Act, that academicians have called the most comprehensive privacy bill in Congress.

I have a commitment to ensuring Congress passes strong and enforceable privacy legislation that secures user data, requires companies to minimize collection of personal data, and gives users access to and control of their data.

Federal privacy legislation cannot undermine California's groundbreaking privacy law and should include protections for small businesses.

I look forward to working with the members on both sides of the aisle to produce the strongest privacy protections for the American people. They've waited a long time for it and I hope that this is the moment where we produce.
