Statement

Date: May 5, 2022
Location: Lowell, MA

Today, Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) named Acton-Boxborough Regional High School sophomore Medhita Sinha as the winner of the Third District's annual Congressional Art Competition during a reception at her District Office in Lowell. This is the first year the Congresswoman has been able to hold the reception for competition participants in-person since 2019.

Sinha's original artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside other winners and she will be invited to Washington, DC for the annual awards ceremony in June. Her painting, entitled "A Simple Afternoon", was made with acrylic paint and mixed media paper, and conveys a family maintaining their tradition of cooking together with a city backdrop.

"Each year, the Congressional Art Competition reminds me just how many brilliant young adults we have right here in the Third District, and how much our community is enriched by their talent and creativity," said Congresswoman Trahan. "These students utilized their personal experiences and the beautiful backdrop of so many of our district's prized architecture, parks, and wildlife to inspire their work, and through their pieces, they inspire us all. Congratulations to all of the participants in this year's competition and reception, and to the winner, Medhita Sinha, for having her work selected by this year's judges. I am honored to continue this tradition of celebrating young artists and look forward to seeing her painting on display in the United States Capitol."

Trahan's office received 21 entries from students across the Third District. She invited several area art experts to help her select the winner, including UMass Lowell Chair of the Art and Design Department Ellen Wetmore, Mount Wachusett Community College Assistant Professor of Arts Jesse Connor, and Executive Director of UMBRELLA Arts Center Jerry Wedge.

About the Art Competition: Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative's office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC.

The winning pieces are displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. In addition, the winner will be invited to a celebratory reception in Washington D.C. in June.
