Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement after reports of a draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade.

"If the draft Supreme Court decision is accurate, it would be a direct attack on the health and safety of millions of women across the nation. For half a century, Roe v. Wade has been, and continues to be, the law of the land, protecting an individuals' right to make their own decisions about their health care, their body and their future.

"These attacks are nothing new. In courts and state houses across the country, women's health care rights have been under assault for years. While California continues to lead the way on abortion rights and access to women's health care, we must demand the same for every woman across the nation. If this draft decision stands, 26 states would quickly ban abortion, leaving more than 36 million women who can become pregnant without access to a safe, legal abortion. These state bans will fall hardest on people of color and people in rural areas, exacerbating inequities these communities already face when it comes to accessing health care.

"I am proud to have voted for the Women's Health Protection Act, and will keep fighting to protect access to a safe, legal abortion for all people, no matter their zip code, income, race, or immigration status. The Senate must act now to advance this legislation that would put an end to these relentless attacks on reproductive rights."
