Matsui Named as Member of Conference Committee for America COMPETES Act

Press Release

Date: April 7, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement after being named as one of the Members of the House who will go to conference with the Senate over the House's America COMPETES Act of 2022. The America COMPETES Act is legislation which makes crucial investments in the production of semiconductor chips and strengthening American supply chains.

Congresswoman Matsui is co-author of the CHIPS for America Act, which would reassert American leadership in the strategically important semiconductor industry by increasing federal incentives to stimulate advanced chip manufacturing -- securing the supply chain and enabling cutting-edge research and development. She has been a vocal advocate to include the full $52 billion needed to comprehensively implement the CHIPS Act in any final package. She also successfully included funding to modernize American telecommunications networks and support innovation.

"American innovation has long put us at the forefront of the world's economy, but we cannot take that position for granted," said Congresswoman Matsui. "This bill is a powerful tool to support continued U.S. leadership in science, especially in the strategically important semiconductor industry. I have long advocated for the need to address the semiconductor shortage and bring our supply chains back to U.S. soil. By giving the CHIPS Act the robust funding it needs, this bill will boost our capacity in two critical areas -- manufacturing and research. Both are needed for long-term viability of a domestic supply chain. I thank Speaker Pelosi for her leadership on this issue, and for appointing me as one of the members tasked with getting this bill to the finish line. Inaction is not an option -- we must act decisively to secure our economic future."
