Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the Senate's confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States:

"The historic confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court redefines what is possible for the next generation of Black women and girls who can now dream of sitting on the highest court in the land.

"As a Black woman lawyer and Alabama's first Black Congresswoman, I know firsthand that you have to see it to be it. Judge Jackson's very presence on the bench will be an inspiration to all women and girls, especially Black women. It was Shirley Chisolm, the first Black woman to walk the Halls of Congress, who said, "if they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.' With the confirmation of Judge Jackson, we as Black women are taking our rightful seat at the bench.

"To the Black women and girls watching today, I submit to you this: You belong. You belong in the halls of Congress. You belong at the White House. You belong at the Supreme Court. You belong in every room where decisions are being made. Define yourself for yourself, and never forget that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
