Chair DeLauro Applauds Historic Victory for Workers at Tridonex Auto Parts Factory in Mexico

Issues: Labor Unions

House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement after workers at Tridonex auto parts plant in Matamoros voted overwhelmingly in favor of appointing a new union, SNITIS, to advocate for better working conditions and higher wages. This historic election follows a successful union election at a General Motors assembly plant in Silao, Mexico, both made possible by the Rapid Response Mechanism included in the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

"Yesterday, workers at the Tridonex auto-parts plant in Matamoros, Mexico, bravely made their voices heard by overwhelmingly voting to appoint SNITIS as their new union. Despite reported efforts of bribery and intimidation by the incumbent union, these workers stood up for their rights and held firm. Following closely behind the successful unionization vote by workers at General Motors in Silao, Mexico, this victory is a sign that corrupt unions used to protect corporate interests at the expense of workers' rights can be a thing of the past.

"A worker's right to form a union, to advocate for better wages and safer working conditions is critical. This victory would not have been possible without the labor standards and enforcement mechanisms included in USMCA. As we continue to see the fruits of the renegotiated NAFTA, I applaud Ambassador Katherine Tai for her skilled negotiations and tireless efforts to secure these labor protections. We will continue to monitor USMCA implementation and work to raise living standards for workers, their families, and their communities."
