House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement on the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States:

"On Tuesday, I hosted an event to honor New Haven's own, Judge Constance Baker Motley, the first Black woman to be appointed a federal judge. It seems fitting that today, we learned Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson--who shares not only Judge Motley's birthday but her unyielding commitment to justice--has made history as the first Black woman to be nominated to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.

"Judge Jackson is a skilled jurist, one of the sharpest legal minds of our time, and is uniquely qualified to serve on the highest court in the land. She has a proven track record of unwavering dedication to the rule of law and unassailable integrity. Her historic nomination is a testament to her determination. Our country is better off because she refused the advice of her high school guidance counselor who told her she should not set her sights "so high.' From Harvard Law School to clerking for retiring Justice Breyer to her current role on the federal bench as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Judge Jackson has met each challenge with sound judgment and unwavering character.

"If confirmed, Judge Jackson would be the first Black woman and the first former federal public defender to serve on the Supreme Court. I applaud President Biden for this profound nomination. Confirmed by the Senate on a bipartisan basis three times--most recently in June--I look forward to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's swift and fair confirmation process."
