Perlmutter Announces Top Finishers In 2022 Congressional Stem App Challenge

U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) announced today the top finishers in the 2022 Congressional STEM App Challenge. In total, eighteen high school groups participated from Northglenn High School and Golden High School.

"I continue to be impressed by the talent and enthusiasm on display during this competition year after year," said Perlmutter. "This event is a great way to engage students and teachers in a fun, collaborative project that encourages them to learn new skills and take their STEM learning to the next level. Congratulations to the top finishers and thank you to all the participating teams and panel of judges for their participation in this year's event."

Each group showcased their app before a slate of judges from across the 7th Congressional District and the judges determined the following:

Best in Show: Sarah Siegel, Giovanni Rodriguez and Benjamin Lange (Northglenn HS)
* "Pastelia Development", a social media app to promote positivity

Best in Show - Honorable Mention: Logan Wynes (Golden HS)
* "Carbon Calculator", an app to create a calculator to track an individual's weekly carbon output as a way to decrease individual carbon output and ultimately encourage a carbon-neutral footprint

Rookie of the Year: Nia Napuli, Kyra Jordan, Berlin Sandberg, and Vanessa Haggard (Golden HS)
* "Peridos", an app to assist and provide a safe space for female students to track their menstrual cycles and as well as include other helpful information resources and information for its users

Rookie of the Year - Honorable Mention: Aiden Boushie, Victor Ibarra, Makayla Clemons and Alex Guzman (Northglenn HS)
* "School Club Finder", an app to assist students how to discover the extracurricular activities at their school

The 2022 Challenge was the seventh year Perlmutter's office has hosted the event. The nationwide competition was established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013 as a way to encourage students from across the country to create and exhibit their software application, or "app". Schools from across the 7th Congressional District have participated in previous years, including Golden High School, Westminster High School, STEM Launch School, Northglenn High School and Arvada High School. Examples of previous winning "apps" include:
* Virtual Reality City Map Locator "app" to allow users to see what City of Northglenn looked like 100+ years ago (2015)
* Scheduling "app" to allow student to better organize their school and extracurricular activities (2016)
* "App" to assist blind students with resources at their school (2017)
* School Locker Locator "app" to assist freshmen students on the fastest route to get to their locker (2019)
* Resource Organizer "app" to connect new students with resources at their school
* A Safe Space "app" to assist students who are having mental health challenges to get connected with the right resources in a safe and efficient manner (2021)
