ICYMI: Rep. Guest Discusses Border Crisis on Fox Business

Press Release

Date: April 20, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

In case you missed it, Vice Ranking Member of Homeland Security Michael Guest joined Mornings with Maria on Fox Business this morning to discuss his efforts to help the men and women of law enforcement in their fight to secure our homeland.

In his conversation, the Congressman discussed the Early Migration Alert Program (EMAP) Act and the Comprehensive Southern Border Strategy Act.

See below for a transcription of the interview with slight edits for content, technical, and sound issues:

"Two pieces of legislation that we've recently authored that we hope… that we can at least get out of committee and hopefully on to the House Floor is the first bill that you just spoke about, the EMAP bill, which would require CBP, require the Department of Homeland Security to notify local law enforcement agencies before immigrants are released into their communities.

We've seen that in communities across our country. I've seen that in communities in my district where immigrants are taken to the local bus station, they're dropped off, and then law enforcement then has to respond to the fact that there are large numbers of immigrants who are there, and they were dropped off without any notice.

The other piece of legislation that I've cosponsored along with Representative Kim from California seems to make even more sense and what that legislation would be is we are just asking the administration to provide us a comprehensive southern border strategy.

You know we have a comprehensive strategy as to how we're going to secure the northern border -- the most secure border probably in the entire world -- yet we do not have the comprehensive strategy as to how were going to secure the southern border. So, these are two pieces of legislation that we think should receive bipartisan support. They're not partisan in any manner. They protect our communities and set forth the plan as to how this administration is going to regain control of the southern border.

But, like you said, because these are pieces of legislation that make sense and pieces of legislation that you would think would have support -- that may prevent from being able to ever receive a vote in Congress."

Background:

Experts have warned that the crisis on the border is likely to grow worse following the removal of Title 42, a tool the Trump Administration used to expel illegal immigrants who could pose health risks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Border agents have been relying on Title 42 as their primary border enforcement tool following the Biden Administration's actions to undermine other enforcement provisions.

This morning, the Committee on Homeland Security Republicans released updated border statistics from March showing a huge increase in the amount of drugs and number of humans crossing the border. Experts warn that daily encounters could reach as many as 18,000 per day if Title 42 is removed.

The Early Migration Alert Program (EMAP) Actand the Comprehensive Southern Border Strategy Act would help address the crisis and alleviate the economic and humanitarian impact on American communities, as well as immigrants themselves.

Congressman Michael Guest represents Mississippi's Third Congressional District. Currently serving his second term, Congressman Guest serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, as a Member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and as a Member of the Committee on Ethics.
