U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement today on the passing of U.S. Marine Corps Brigadier General Ronald Van Stockum:

"In modern times, men like Brigadier General Ronald Van Stockum can seem more like legend than reality. General Van Stockum received two Legion of Merit medals, a Bronze Star, and a Commendation medal for his thirty-two years of military service in the Marines, spanning the Second World War, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He wrote more than 300 historical columns and six books about Kentucky history. He was active in his local government and veterans advocacy groups. He remained productive throughout his life, publishing works well past his one hundredth birthday.

"General Van Stockum saw and participated in some of the most important moments in American history. As a history enthusiast himself, I'm confident he appreciated his privileged place at the vanguard of so many world-changing events. Though he lived and served across the globe, General Van Stockum was a Kentucky resident for the past half-century, contributing his character and wisdom to the Commonwealth. Elaine and I share our deepest condolences with this inspiring man's family and his children Michele, Reggie, and Charlie."
