Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) and Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16) introduced the bipartisan Government Ownership and Oversight of Data in Artificial Intelligence (GOOD AI) Act. This bill would secure data collected by AI technologies, such as facial recognition and media algorithms, by federal agencies and contractors. The bill would require the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to establish and consult with an Artificial Intelligence Hygiene Working Group to ensure the related data collection is protected against misuse by establishing best practices for identifying, assessing, and mitigating any discriminatory impact or bias on the basis of any classification protected under Federal nondiscrimination laws. This legislation is the House companion to a bill introduced by Sens. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Rob Portman (R-OH). To view the full text of the bill, click here.

"The rise of artificial intelligence promises many advances in how we collect and interpret data, but this means that Congress has a responsibility to protect and secure the information that is collected. In an ever-changing technological environment, it's important that we update our policies to preserve the American people's privacy and identify and eliminate the discriminatory biases sometimes found in AI technology ," said Rep. Lawrence. "Today, I'm proud to join forces with Representative Gonzalez to introduce this bipartisan bill to bring our government tech framework to the 21st Century and put in guardrails for data collection by AI technology."

"As technology surrounding AI continues to evolve and expand it is critical that we take necessary steps to protect the privacy of Americans. I am glad to join my colleague, Rep. Lawrence, in introducing the bipartisan GOOD AI Act to ensure that information collected using AI technologies is done so in a secure manner," said Rep. Gonzalez.
