Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Judicial Branch

Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14), 2nd Vice Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Co-Chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus, issued the following statement in response to President Biden's nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"I could not be more thrilled with the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as our next United States Supreme Court Justice. In addition to an unparalleled dedication and commitment to public service, she is a highly-distinguished and widely-respected jurist. Judge Jackson has a long track record of championing the rule of law and justice with her experience serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, U.S. District Court for D.C., the U.S. Sentencing Commission, and as a federal public defender.

"As the little Black girl who grew up on the eastside of Detroit, it's hard to describe what this moment means for me. Black women have been overlooked for centuries--in employment, education, politics, C-suites, and all aspects of society. The impact Judge Jackson will have on the Supreme Court cannot be understated. She brings with her a set of values, perspective, and lived experiences that will make the Supreme Court more fair and just. Today, we're making Black history. Today, we're making American history. I look forward to a swift and fair confirmation process for Judge Jackson."
