U.S. Rep. Lawrence Commemorates Black History Month

Statement

Date: Feb. 1, 2022
Location: Detroit, MI

Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14) issued the following statement to commemorate Black History Month.

"During Black History Month, our country celebrates the history and achievements of the African American community. We honor the leaders, innovators, and pioneers--past and present--who blaze trails and break glass ceilings. Especially as a Black woman in Congress and the only Black member in the Michigan congressional delegation, I honor those who have come before me and continue to lift up the next generation of Black leaders.

"Black History Month is also more than just a celebration, but it's a commitment to fighting for the issues of Black Americans. From the COVID-19 pandemic to voting rights and Black maternal mortality to education and housing, there is so much more work that we need to do. Together, let's continue to fight for justice and equality and for Black Americans across the country.
