DeLay: Staying on Top of Homeland Security
Welcomes U. A. E. Relinquishment of Port Management

Washington, Mar 9 - Congressman Tom DeLay (R-Sugar Land) today welcomed news that the United Arab Emirates company, Dubai Ports World, was relinquishing its proposed management stake in six American ports.

"I said right away it seemed like a bad idea to have a foreign government-owned company managing our ports, and now just about everyone agrees," DeLay said. "We need to see all the details yet, but this certainly seems like a step in the right direction. Congress, and particularly the House Appropriations Committee on which I sit, was right to take the lead on blocking this deal, and one day later, we're already seeing results."

DeLay also encouraged Congress not to ignore the issue of port security simply because the DP World controversy appears to be dying down. "We have oversight responsibilities, and they don't go away just because the cameras do," DeLay said. "We need to stay on top of our homeland and national security responsibilities so that Congress continues to play its vital role in the winning of our war on terror."
