A coalition of Illinois Latino elected officials led by U.S. Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García (IL-04) issued the following statement upon the historic confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court:

"As members of the Illinois Latino Elected Coalition, we are thrilled to congratulate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on her confirmation. We need more justices from diverse backgrounds, and the confirmation of the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court is long overdue.

"Throughout her confirmation hearing, Judge Jackson repeatedly displayed her integrity, legal brilliance, and depth of experience despite racist questioning by Republican Senators. And she demonstrated that the diversity she brings to the Court is not only her race and gender, but also her experience as a federal public defender.

"The Supreme Court considers cases on topics pivotal to Black and Brown communities, like immigration, criminal justice, voting rights, and so much more. We celebrate Judge Jackson's confirmation to the Court and look forward to the fresh perspective she will bring."
