Slotkin Statement on House Passage of the America COMPETES Act

Statement

Date: Feb. 4, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed the America COMPETES Act:

"This morning I voted to pass the America COMPETES Act, a bill with robust provisions to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the United States and make key investments in research, innovation, and development to help us maintain our competitive edge over China.

"This is a good bill with tons of bipartisan, Made in America provisions -- including my legislation to revamp our Strategic National Stockpile with American-made supplies. But D.C. political games have taken hold and turned a bipartisan initiative into a partisan bill, and both parties are to blame. The Democratic leadership shouldn't have waited over 6 months to bring this bill up for a vote in the House, and Republicans shouldn't have overwhelmingly opposed a bill with so many provisions they're on the record supporting.

"The chip shortage is wreaking havoc on our economy -- especially in Michigan. It has dangerous implications for our national security, and it's an issue where Republicans and Democrats largely agree on what the solution needs to look like. If we can't pass a bill to end this crisis, we don't deserve to be in elected office.

"My message to the leadership on both sides is this: stop the partisan games and negotiate a deal with the Senate immediately to get the key provisions of this bill signed into law. The auto workers and suppliers in my district are depending on us to get this done *now* -- I won't stay quiet if partisan games leave them holding the bag."
