Kaine Statement Applauding ICC Opening Investigation into War Crimes in Ukraine

Statement

Date: March 1, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee focused on democracy and human rights, released the following statement applauding International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan's announcement that he will launch an investigation into war crimes or crimes against humanity in Ukraine:

"The ICC opening an investigation into Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine is a step in the right direction and could allow Putin and other Russians to be held responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity like deliberately attacking civilians. While this investigation will not shame Putin, it will make many Russians ashamed of Putin."

Kaine has called on the ICC to open an investigation into the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Kaine chairs the SFRC Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues.
