Kildee Leads Effort to Lower Gasoline Prices, Cut Taxes for Michiganders

Statement

Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today introduced the Gas Prices Relief Act, legislation to lower gasolines prices and cut taxes for Michiganders by suspending the federal gas tax through the end of the year.

"I am working to lower costs for Michigan families, including reducing prices at the pump," Congressman Kildee said. "Many families are seeing higher prices because of pandemic-related supply chain issues. Helping to lower gas prices is one way that we can immediately put more money back in the pockets of working families."

The Gas Prices Relief Act would bring down prices at the pump for Michigan drivers by suspending the federal gas tax, which is 18.4 cents per gallon, until January 1, 2023. Suspending the federal gas tax is estimated to save Michiganders hundreds of millions of dollars, based on data from the Federal Highway Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The federal gas tax disproportionately impacts rural Michiganders, who need to travel longer distances to get to the grocery store, see their doctors, go to the pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions or travel to work and school.

The Gas Prices Relief Act will lower high gas prices and deliver much-needed economic relief to Michiganders by: 

Suspending the 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax.
Passing cost savings to Michiganders, not oil and gas companies. This bill empowers the Department of Treasury to ensure oil and gas companies pass along the savings of this tax cut to consumers at the pump.
Maintaining the integrity of the Highway Trust Fund. The bill will ensure the Highway Trust Fund remains fully funded by transferring general fund dollars so the U.S. can continue to invest in repairing roads, bridges and highways.
Congressman Kildee is working to lower costs for Michigan families by tackling the supply chain issues that are driving up many consumer prices. Kildee recently helped pass the America COMPETES Act--a bill to help fix broken supply chains and lower costs for Michigan families, seniors and small businesses. Kildee also worked to pass the Build Back Better Act in the House, a bill to cut taxes for middle class families and lower the out-of-pocket cost of health insurance premiums, prescription drugs and child care, in addition to combatting the climate crisis.
