Burgess: Instead of lifting the Union out of crisis, Biden has led us into more crises

Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), released the following statement after attending tonight's State of the Union Address given by President Joseph R. Biden.

"Over the last year, Americans have watched the Union fall into one crisis after another, from rising inflation to cutting American energy production to opening our borders," said Burgess.

"The President proposed even more spending that will increase inflation instead of slowing it down. There remains more than $340 billion unobligated from the previous coronavirus relief packages. In addition, there are billions of dollars passed by the House for Green New Deal priorities. We should be using this funding to help the Ukrainian people in their fight for survival or to secure our southern border. Americans understand that more partisan spending is continuing this inflation crisis.

"The President said that "I'm a capitalist, but capitalism without competition isn't capitalism.' Mr. President, allowing the government to decide winners and losers will not increase competition but eliminate it. We must lower drug prices, but holding American scientists hostage to government price controls will not bring the newest cures to patients.

"Our nation is facing an energy crisis simply because of executive orders signed on President Biden's first day in office. If our goal is a carbon neutral future, we must invest in nuclear energy and open Yucca Mountain for business. Limiting the ability to use our own resources to achieve energy independence only emboldens Putin's Russia. We need actual solutions.

"Our country is also facing an ongoing crisis at our southern border. The words from President Biden will not turn off the "Open Now' sign he lit there upon entering the Oval Office. Instead, his words continue to encourage immigrants to make the dangerous journey to unlawfully cross our border.

"Overall President Biden listed off a number of crises this nation is facing without providing any solution other than the nine scariest words, according to President Reagan, "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."'
