Mullin Introduces Bill to Create Educational Program to Support Victims of Online Attacks

Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-02), member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, recently introduced H.R. 6786, the Consumer Education on Law Enforcement Resources Act, to support victims of online attacks, including instances of doxing and posting explicit photos without consent for revenge.

"Protecting the privacy of Americans online is more important than ever," Mullin said. "Too often, Americans don't know what to do or where to turn when their online privacy is violated. This legislation will help the public learn about the resources available for recourse if they ever become a victim of one of these awful attacks."

H.R. 6786 directs the Federal Trade Commission and Attorney General to create an educational program to inform the public about potential resources available if a violation or threat to one's safety has occurred, such as doxing or "revenge porn." Additionally, this bill requires the federal government to consult with state and local law enforcement while building this program.

This bill is part of Energy and Commerce Republicans' Big Tech Accountability Platform, which aims to increase meaningful transparency, enhance oversight and accountability, push for consistency and objectivity, and explore competition issues so innovation is unleashed, not quashed.
