Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement commemorating the six month anniversary of the July 11th anti-communist protests against the Cuban regime throughout the island of Cuba. A significant day that will forever be known as a day where Cubans from all walks of life, marched peacefully seeking freedom. After the historic protests, Rubio spoke on the Senate floor where he stated: "Young people in Cuba, artists in Cuba, realize that the only country on this planet where Cubans are not successful is Cuba, and they're tired of it. And we should stand with them."

"What occurred in Cuba six months ago was an unprecedented and historic event, which proved that a new generation of Cubans is tired of the promises of a failed Communist revolution," Rubio said. "For over sixty years, the Castro regime has subjected the people of Cuba to unimaginable hardships. The July 11th protests showed the world that the desire for freedom is more powerful than the strong arm of a tyrannical and repressive dictatorship. We cannot allow their voices to be silenced, which is why the Senate needs to pass my PATRIA Y VIDA Act now."

Rubio's PATRIA Y VIDA Act would build a strategy to protect internet freedom worldwide and strengthen support for technologies that allow users to evade foreign government-backed censorship and restrictions.

Rubio is the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women's Issues
