Congressman Tim Ryan today issued the following statement on the first anniversary of the insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021:

"None of us can or should forget the events of January 6th and the attempted ransacking of our representative democracy. As we collectively remember the events of one year ago today, let us first pause to pray for those who lost their lives in the line of duty--not only that day, but the days and weeks following. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of these patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect members of Congress and defend our nation's Capitol.

As a member of Congress and the Chair of the House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee, I have worked tirelessly to ensure that what happened on January 6, 2021 never happens again. With my colleague, Appropriations Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro, I introduced the Emergency Security Supplemental Government Funding Bill to invest in the resources needed to keep our members, staff, and employees who show up and serve their country every day safe. This bill also delivered critical funding to support our heroic rank and file Capitol Police officers who continue to grapple with the lasting impacts of that day. Though we have come a long way in one year, there is much more work to be done to bolster the safety, security, and health of every public servant working in our Capitol building.

As a country we face big challenges, and Democrats and Republicans need to work together to heal this country and move forward. As we reflect on this dark day in our country's history, let us also reaffirm the sanctity of our democratic process and recommit to a government that works for all Americans."
