Press Release

Date: Jan. 13, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement after the House passed the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, which combined the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act into one bill. In a vote of 220-203, Rep. Kaptur joined every House Democrat to pass the bill, while House Republicans were unanimous in their opposition. The bill will now be sent to the Senate for its consideration.

"Across the land, we are witnessing an unprecedented attempt to curtail the foundational American principle of government being of the people, by the people, and for the people," said Rep. Kaptur. "From despicable efforts to overturn free and fair elections, to unconscionable measures that seek to further deny and restrict access to the ballot box, America is truly at a crossroads. The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is a vitally important tool to safeguard the health and vibrancy of our precious democracy. As we approach the commemoration of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, I urge the Senate to swiftly act in order to preserve freedom and justice for present and future generations."
