Rep. Titus Statement on Situation in Ukraine

Statement

Date: Feb. 22, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today Representative Dina Titus of Nevada's First Congressional District, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.

"Beginning with the invasion of Crimea in 2014, Ukrainian sovereignty has been subject to persistent aggression from Vladimir Putin and his totalitarian regime. The U.S. stands ready to support Ukraine's right to self-determination, assist its democratically elected government, and impose unprecedented sanctions on Russia," said Rep. Dina Titus.

"Since the unwarranted attack in 2014, Russian-backed separatists have spurred persistent violence in Ukraine. Now aided by Russian troops on the ground in Ukraine, a new course has been set that is bound to lead to an escalation in violence toward the Ukrainian people. We've reached a tipping point. It is critical that democracies of the world push back on autocratic forces seeking to undermine them."

As a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Congresswoman Titus is an original cosponsor of the Defending Ukraine Sovereignty Act of 2022. This legislation authorizes robust security assistance for Ukraine and includes punishing economic consequences and sanctions authorities, including on Russian financial institutions and Russian leaders, that would be triggered by Russia proceeding with further incursions into Ukraine.
