Rep. Payne, Jr.'s Statement on the First Anniversary of the January 6th Attack on American Democracy

Statement

Date: Jan. 6, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. issued the following statement today regarding the first anniversary of the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol Building. During the attack, a mob of former President Donald Trump supporters attempted to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential Election. The insurrection killed five people, injured at least 140 law enforcement officials, and forced members of Congress and their staff to flee the Capitol.

"Today, we mark the anniversary of one of the most tragic events in American history. For the first time ever, American citizens stormed the Capitol Building to illegally change the result of a free and fair election. The right to vote is sacred and all Americans have the right to have their vote counted. What happened on January 6, 2021 should anger every American. It should convince every national elected official that we need new laws to protect our elections and our votes. I applaud Representative Bennie Thompson and my colleagues who are investigating the horrible events of that day. My prayers continue to go out to the brave law enforcement officials who tried to save our Capitol Building and protect our elected officials from harm during the attack."
