Doyle Announces $16 Billion for Pennsylvania Transportation Investments Under New Infrastructure Law

Date: Dec. 16, 2021

U.S. Representative Mike Doyle (D-PA-18) announced that Pennsylvania will receive more than $16 billion in new federal investments in its transportation infrastructure over the next five years through the newly enacted Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

"For too long, lack of infrastructure investment has hurt our economy and the middle class. Leaders on both sides of the aisle have been calling to rebuild our infrastructure for decades and I am pleased to have contributed and finally see it come to fruition," said Congressman Doyle. "Not only will we cut down commute times and keep travelers safe on our roads, but we'll also grow our economy by helping small businesses get goods to market. This historic investment to rebuild America's infrastructure will also create thousands of good paying jobs in Pittsburgh and across the state, as we bring our transportation system into the 21st century."

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will receive $2 billion in new federal funding for highway construction and repair in 2022 under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act-- and a total of $11.3 billion between 2022 and 2026.

In addition, Pennsylvania will receive more than $1.6 billion over the next five years under the IIJA's Bridge Replacement, Rehabilitation, Preservation, Protection and Construction Program.

Pennsylvania will also receive more than $600 million in 2022 in federal transit funding -- and more than $3.2 billion over the next five years -- through the IIJA; that's a roughly 40 percent increase over the 2021 funding level of $436 million.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act also provides more than $50 million for airports in Pennsylvania, including $11 million in FAA funding for improvements at Pittsburgh International Airport and $763,000 for work at the Allegheny County Airport.

The historic Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, signed into law by President Biden on November 15th, provides $1.2 trillion in federal funding for infrastructure repair and construction over the next five years, including historic investments to expand broadband access and upgrade ports, waterways, and drinking- and waste-water systems.

The American Society of Civil Engineers gave Pennsylvania a C- grade on its Infrastructure Report Card, finding that 4,173 bridges and 43% of roads to be in poor condition. The investments from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will be sure to improve these conditions and create good-paying union jobs to strengthen Pennsylvania's neglected infrastructure.

"I was proud to vote for this historic legislation -- which will make a tremendous difference in the lives of Pittsburghers and their neighbors across the state," continued Congressman Doyle. "This proves that government can still get big things done for the American people. I look forward to seeing more federal funding flow into our communities."
