Thompson Leads Congressional Delegation Calling for Transparency of Low Military Flights in PA Wilds Region

Date: Feb. 4, 2022
Location: Warren, PA

U.S. Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson, and members of the Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation, are pushing for more transparency surrounding the proposal to conduct low-altitude military training over portions of North Central Pennsylvania.

The Representatives sent a letter Thursday to the Maryland Air National Guard and the Airspace National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Program Manager and to request a public meeting, a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and voice their opposition to the proposed Low Military Operation Area.

The request for a public meeting follows the end of the public comment period, which concluded December 31, 2021. A public meeting would provide more transparency for citizens of North Central Pennsylvania and Southern New York and allow an opportunity for the public to ask questions.

"We also respectfully request the completion of a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). As you know, an EIS is required, according to the National Environmental Policy Act, when the proposed action may reach "substantial environmental controversy concerning the significance or nature of the environmental impact,'" the Representatives wrote.

Rep. Thompson has previously expressed concern over the economic and environmental impacts low military training flights may have upon the Pennsylvania Wilds Region. This area includes numerous state parks, forests, and wildlife that lend to tourism, recreation, and the overall economy of the region.

"Military readiness is of the utmost importance, yet I remain concerned with the potential economic and environmental impacts additional low military flights will have upon the region," Thompson said. "Prior to moving forward with these plans, the Air National Guard should meet with the community to ensure their questions and concerns are addressed."

Representatives Fred Keller and Dan Meuser joined Rep. Thompson in sending the letter.
