Location: San Jose, CA
Issues: Veterans

Today, U.S. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (CA-19) announced that the U.S. Department of Justice will provide the Santa Clara County Superior Court with $625,000 to expand services at its Veterans Treatment Court.

"Veterans selflessly served our country, and we owe them a debt of gratitude," said Rep. Lofgren. "Veterans with substance use or mental health disorders often need treatment and help, not incarceration. As such, California's treatment courts have a proven track record. This grant will help Santa Clara County veterans receive the services they need to get back on their feet."

Santa Clara County was among the first jurisdictions in the country to establish a treatment court to address substance use and mental health disorders through intervention and other services, including Medication-Assisted Treatment, rather than incarceration.

This grant comes from the Department of Justice's Adult Drug Court and Veterans Treatment Court Discretionary Grant Program, and will be used to serve 240 local veterans over four years through coordinated case management.

Government funding legislation, which Rep. Lofgren voted for in December 2020, provided $25 million for Veterans Treatment Courts for Fiscal Year 2021, an increase of $2 million over previous funding levels. This year, Rep. Lofgren also led nearly 100 of her colleagues in urging the House Appropriations Committee to support funding for treatment courts in Fiscal Year 2022.
