CRIST STATEMENT ON BLACK HISTORY MONTH

U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) released the following statement in recognition of Black History Month:

"As we celebrate Black History Month, let us honor the rich culture of Black Americans and recognize the countless contributions they have made to our nation. We pay tribute to all those who marched, stood tall in the face of racism, and fought tirelessly for justice and equality for all, regardless of the color of our skin.

"In the Sunshine State, we commemorate the extraordinary accomplishments of Black Floridians and take great pride in their achievements. I'm proud to honor Mayor Ken Welch, who made history this January as the first Black Mayor of St. Petersburg. I applaud him for his commitment to preserving and investing in St. Petersburg's historically Black neighborhoods, while addressing the racial disparities that continue to exist between communities across Pinellas. From Emancipation to Jim Crow, and from the Civil Rights Movement to the fight for racial justice today, the history of the Black community throughout Florida, and across America, exemplifies perseverance and triumph.

"While we reflect on accomplishments, we remember that injustice still exists. That means for all freedom-loving Floridians, regardless of race, our fight is not over. Voter suppression laws that disproportionately affect Black communities, the continued consequences of redlining, and disparities in the criminal justice system are still harming Black Americans to this day.

"In the words of the late, great Congressman - and my friend - John Lewis, "Freedom is the continuous action we all must take, and each generation must do its part to create an even more fair, more just society.' Let us continue to fight for equality and justice for all Americans."
