"Justice Stephen Breyer's remarkable public service career spans over two decades. During that time, he has nobly served the American people and faithfully upheld our laws and constitution. In the coming weeks, a successor worthy of carrying on Justice Breyer's legacy on the U.S. Supreme Court will be chosen to fill the soon-to-be vacant seat. The qualifications of a Supreme Court nominee should not be dependent on what university they attended, but more importantly, on who they are. Former Justice Thurgood Marshall did not graduate from an ivy league institution and could not attend his home state university the University of Maryland because of his race. He was a proud alumnus of the highly acclaimed Howard University School of Law and as a Justice on the Supreme Court, he successfully went on to "…administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich…" as required by his oath of office. You do not have to attend an ivy league school to receive a high-quality education. And you most certainly do not have to be an ivy league alumus to sit on the Supreme Court. I look forward to welcoming a justice who will bring increased representation and educational diversity to our nation's highest court. I extend by sincerest gratitude to Justice Breyer for his invaluable service."
