"For more than 20 years, Justice Stephen Breyer has served on the Supreme Court of the United States, his sensible wisdom, legal experience, and liberalism have helped transform the social fabric of our country. Since his 1994 appointment by then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, Justice Breyer has been a powerful voice on issues ranging from the legalization of same-sex marriage across all 50 states, protecting affirmative action and a woman's right to choose, while staunchly questioning the constitutionality of the death penalty," Congressman Al Green said. "Justice Breyer's legacy on the highest court of the land will no doubt be praised by posterity. I am grateful for the invaluable service he has provided to the American people during his tenure."

Congressman Al Green concluded, "While the departure of Justice Breyer is a tremendous loss to the Supreme Court, I am optimistic his soon-to-be vacant seat will be filled by a worthy successor. I fully support the historic nomination of the first Black woman to the nine-member Court. Such a momentous move will get us closer to shattering the glass ceiling once and for all and pave the way for fairer representation across our nation."
