QUIGLEY STATEMENT ON ANNIVERSARY OF JANUARY 6 INSURRECTION

Statement

Date: Jan. 6, 2022

Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) released a statement on the one-year anniversary of the January 6 insurrection and attack on the Capitol. Quigley will attend and participate in commemorative events at the Capitol today.

"On January 6, 2021, I endured the attack on the U.S. Capitol that resulted in one of the worst assaults on our democracy in history. I am still grateful every day for the heroic efforts of the U.S. Capitol Police and Metro Police who kept my colleagues and I from coming to harm that day. They certainly saved my life and I believe that they may have also saved our republic.

"Despite the danger we faced, I was proud that Congress returned to session that night and followed through on our constitutional responsibility to certify the election. Two weeks later, we were able to stand in nearly the exact same place the attack began and watch as President Joe Biden was sworn in.

"One year later, many questions still remain about what happened on January 6th and how the previous administration responded. I have been deeply impressed by the Select Committee's investigation so far. Witnesses must continue to cooperate with their work, the perpetrators must be held responsible, and I look forward to reading the Committee's report when the investigation concludes.

"Despite the harrowing events of that day, many Congressional Republicans have spent the past year spreading disinformation about the insurrection and perpetuating President Trump's lies about the 2020 election results. Let me be clear: by undermining our democratic processes and glorifying autocrats, Republicans and conservative leaders continue to put the future of our democracy at risk."
