Larson Statement on the 9th Anniversary of Shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary

Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the ninth anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT:

"It's been nine years since 26 lives were tragically taken in a senseless act of gun violence. Our hearts continue to go out to their families and loved ones. The House has heard the public and has acted by passing the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, the Violence Against Women Act, and the Enhanced Background Checks Act (which would close the Charleston loophole). To the shame of the nation the Senate has not taken up any legislation to address gun violence, despite the efforts of Senators Blumenthal and Murphy. Republicans hide behind a Senate rule that is detrimental to our democracy and the republic. Where in the Constitution does it say you need 60 votes to take up a bill the House has already passed? The cloture vote has allowed Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans to align themselves with the NRA and block bipartisan legislation. It's time to let the voices of Sandy Hook and their families be heard. It's time to do what we take the oath of office to do and vote. Vote the will of the public and take steps to end the gun violence epidemic in this nation."
