Congressman Patrick McHenry (NC-10) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 5376, Congressional Democrats' monstrous, far-left $1.75 trillion tax and spending bill:

"Today, House Democrats passed a reckless tax and spending bill that will drive up the cost of living for the American people and leave us further in debt. This legislation will have stark consequences for people here in North Carolina. It raises taxes on everyday necessities like the gas that fuels our cars and heats our homes. While North Carolinians will be stuck paying more, this bill creates new tax breaks and subsidies that mostly benefit people in big cities in blue states. This bill will also perpetuate our nation's labor shortage by continuing welfare benefits without work requirements and imposes billions of dollars in taxes on the main street businesses that create jobs in our communities. Further, it weaponizes the IRS against the American people -- mandating tens of thousands of new audits -- allowing them to invade the privacy of families and small businesses.

"It is also deeply concerning to see how Democrats are trying to force their far-left ideologies on to the American people through this monstrous bill. This bill not only deliberately excludes the Hyde Amendment, which for decades has prevented taxpayer-funded abortions, but also punishes states for not adopting Green New Deal provisions, threatens our 2nd Amendment rights, and encourages illegal immigration by offering benefits to those here illegally.

"While there seems to be no end to the list of terrible provisions included in this $1.75 trillion dollar bill, one thing is clear: House Democrats are advancing their progressive agenda at the expense of the American people."
