Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement as the United States Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.

"This case marks the first time in 50 years that the nation's top court is hearing a case that directly jeopardizes the bedrock Roe v. Wade abortion decision," said Senator Markey. "It is women, Black, Indigenous and other people of color, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, young people, the poor, and people with disabilities who are most harmed by abortion restrictions and bans. With a 6-3 conservative majority on the Court, we cannot stand idly by as we await the ruling. We must act immediately, including abolishing the filibuster if necessary, to pass federal legislation that protects millions of Americans' access to legal abortion care, lifts dangerous bans like Mississippi's, and removes unnecessary limits on reproductive freedom. Ultimately, to remove dangerous partisanship and restore balance, we must expand the U.S. Supreme Court."
