Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03) announced today that Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) and Bowman Field will soon receive more than $13 million in first-year funding from the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, legislation supported by Yarmuth that was signed into law by President Biden in November. The announcement comes on the heels of an award of more than $36.5 million in funding the airports received in June of this year from the Yarmuth-sponsored American Rescue Plan.

The Louisville Regional Airport Authority will target the funding for their $400 million terminal and airfield modernization project. This includes mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades to their dated terminal; replacement of passenger boarding bridges; and providing a better experience for passengers.

"This is a tremendous step forward in bringing much-needed infrastructure funding back home to Louisville," said Yarmuth. "Given the critical importance of air transportation to our local and regional economies, I am so proud to have played a role in securing this $13 million federal investment that will be used to improve services at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and Bowman Field. I want to thank President Biden for his work in helping get this legislative package across the finish line, and for making these historic, job-creating investments in our nation's infrastructure a top priority."

The legislation included $15 billion nationwide in formula funding for airport development grants. These projects include improvements to runways and taxiways, terminal development, and noise prevention. In addition to guaranteed formula funds, airports can compete for $5 billion nationally for airport terminal and landside improvements, and the FAA will distribute an additional $5 billion nationally for FAA towers and facilities funding.

"We appreciate the support of Congressman Yarmuth for the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport," said Dan Mann, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. "This funding will go a long way in supporting the continued improvements at SDF including our $400 million terminal modernization program and on-going sustainability initiatives such as our geothermal project to reduce our carbon footprint. These improvements allow us to provide a better, more accessible experience for the traveling public and support the needs of our airline partners while maintaining SDF as a crucial link in the nation's aerospace system."

Kentucky's airports will receive more than $40 million in total funding in this first allotment of funding through the Federal Aviation Administration. A full list of recipients in Kentucky and nationwide can be found here.

"The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has given us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build safer and more sustainable airports that connect individuals to jobs and communities to the world," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. "With this new funding, urban, regional and rural airports across the country now can get to work on projects that have waited for years, modernizing their infrastructure and building a better America."
