Congresswoman Nikema Williams Leads Introduction of Bipartisan Resolution Commemorating Life and Legacy of Senator Max Cleland

Today, Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) led the introduction of a bipartisan resolution commemorating the life and legacy of former U.S. Senator Max Cleland who passed away on November 9, 2021, at the age of 79. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) led the legislation in the Senate.

"Senator Cleland was a true statesman who represented the best of Georgia," said Congresswoman Williams. "He always said he was not a hero, but how else could you describe him? His patriotism and commitment to service are an inspiration to us all. This resolution is the first step to honoring the life of one of Georgia's finest citizens."

"The nation has lost a true giant of public service, and Georgia has lost one of our fiercest champions," said Senator Reverend Warnock. "My prayers remain with Senator Cleland's family and all those who loved him. Senator Cleland was a passionate patriot with a big heart for our veterans, and he always put the people of Georgia first. Georgians will long remember and admire his honorable life, legacy and contributions to our state and nation."

The resolution reads in part:

"…the House of Representatives has heard with profound sorrow and deep regret the announcement of the death of Joseph Maxwell Cleland; honors the life and legacy of the late Senator Joseph Maxwell Cleland for his courage and sacrifice in combat in the Vietnam War; unwavering dedication to Georgia as a State Senator, Secretary of State, and Senator; and honorable service to the United States and veterans of the United States through his lifetime of public service and tenure as Administrator of the Veterans Administration; proclaims that Joseph Maxwell Cleland represented the best of Georgia's commitment to the United States and served continually for more than 50 years with an unwavering commitment to public service…"
