Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $891,208 in Distance Learning and Telemedicine grant funding to East Guernsey Local School District to help combat substance misuse by providing education and telehealth services. This will be done by educating the public on the effects of substance abuse, mental health counseling, and accessing programs. This project is expected to benefit over 2,000 residents in the region.

"Ohio schools need access to the technology necessary to provide proper health education services," Brown said. "This funding will give East Guernsey Local School District the tools needed to adapt and ensure the community has the resources it needs to educate students on substance misuse and the treatment services available to them."

East Guernsey Local School District will provide $139,600 in additional funding to bring the total project funding to $1,030,808.

These funds are a part of the USDA's Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program (DLT). The program helps rural communities use the unique capabilities of telecommunications to connect to each other and to the world, helps rural residents tap into the enormous potential of modern telecommunications and the Internet for education and health care, and overcome the effects of remoteness and low population density.
