Grassley Hosts Second Federal Judiciary Youth Summit

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today held his second Federal Judiciary Youth Summit at the Des Moines Federal Courthouse. Nineteen high schools from eight counties in central Iowa participated in the program. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger and Senior District Judge James E. Gritzner spoke on their involvement in the federal judiciary system.

"I enjoy any opportunity to engage in dialogue with Iowa high school students about how the federal courts impact their families and way of life. Whether exercising their constitutional freedoms, casting a vote at the ballot box, running for public office or serving on a jury, I want to encourage young people to engage in civic life and make a difference in their communities," Grassley said.

"Getting to ask questions to two federal judges and a U.S. Senator was a wonderful opportunity. I think civic engagement is very important for my generation. Today was a great experience. I plan to major in pre-med and political science," Le Yuan Sun, a senior at Shenandoah High School said.

"Today's event with Senator Grassley and Judges Ebinger and Gritzner was a unique and valuable experience for students across Central Iowa. They were able to hear firsthand how the judicial system works here in Iowa and at the federal level. I commend Senator Grassley's mission to educate and support student interest and involvement in local and national government. My students are eager to share their experience with classmates and friends," Julie Heitz, educator at Ankeny Community School District said.

As part of his longstanding effort to engage Iowans in our system of representative government, uphold the separation of powers and foster participation in civic life, Grassley, ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, held his second youth summit to focus on the federal judiciary and its impact on daily life. Grassley hosted his first student summit on the judiciary in 2018 in Cedar Rapids.
